Bill Sublette: Mountain Man
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (June, 1981)

Legendary figure of the early American WestSince I enjoy reading about the fur trade era, and since I live in Wyoming with a county named after Sublette, I decided to read the biography of this noteworthy man to gain a better understanding as to what part he played in the early American West. John Sunder has done a wonderful job of research and writing in this book. It was a pleasure to read. William Sublette was a man of remarkable stature, being so instrumental in all aspects of the fur trade from the early 1820's to the mid 1830's. After reading one adventure after another during these mountain years in Wyoming, the author then takes us past these formative years to when Sublette was later a prominent farmer, businessman and political affiliate in the St. Louis area. I can see why Wyoming named a county after him.

Final Celebrations: A Guide for Personal and Family Funeral Planning
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Publishing of California (August, 1992)
Average review score:

Not bad, but not great either.I've read widely in books on this topic, and I'd have to say this one is more superficial than some others that are equally available. Not a time-waster, but you come away with "helpful hints" rather than the realistic nurturing and empowering you need in order to be able to act in a time of grieving.
A gem of a book during trying timesThis book, "Final Celebrations" was passed to me by a friend during a particularly hard period. Very simply and beautifully, it laid out options for saying final goodbyes to a loved one. It answered a lot of the questions I was too distraught to ask about at the time. I was very grateful. This book is a gem, and should be widely available.

The Book of Days: A Compendium of Celebrations, Common and Arcane
Published in Paperback by DIANE Publishing Co (June, 1996)
Average review score:

Lots of holidays missing.Yet another mostly American holiday book. Lots of info is not quite accurate (ie - Bird Day, April 9 - is actually International Migratory Bird Day and should be on May 10 (according to the National Audubon Society!)) Cute to look up your birthday but otherwise a waste of $$
Interesting, not comprehensiveIt's a good reference book, but it lacks a lot of the bizarre or odd days and occasions that are the most amusing.
Interesting stuffJust what I needed. If you want to get information on some really far-fetched special days, this is the book for you.
